QBO vs Xero: The Project… how it all started!

I have been using Xero for years! I help people move to Xero every day of the week from MYOB, paper or whatever system they are using. Why? Because it’s easy to use, it’s affordable and it’s go a whole lot of add ons that help you make running your business more efficient.

But here’s the thing… there is a not-so-new cloud accounting software that has caught up to Xero so fast that I just can’t ignore it anymore. It wasn’t that I meant to ignore it, I have just been so busy helping people with Xero that I didn’t have the time to get to know QuickBooks Online.

Both Marlon and I became certified in QBO in December 2015, however, much like all certification processes in the SAAS world – if you know basic accounting and have a decent memory you can pass with flying colours without really knowing the system.Nine months later, it’s time to REALLY learn the system.

I advocate that I will always help clients find the system that’s right for them and I know that QBO has many, many features worth knowing and worth talking about even in the add-on or “app” marketplace without even focusing on the accounting product.

However, you can’t say a car is great just because it looks pretty and it has all the extra features – cup holders, air con and a DVD player… what’s the use of a car if it doesn’t run? Do what a car is meant to do… it’s useless right?

I’m already pleasantly surprised by the ease of use, affordability and functionality of QBO – especially it’s mobile app! – and I can’t wait to learn more and share with your what I have found and the TRUE, INDEPENDENT differences between Xero and QBO.

Here’s my plan:

I am going to run my business on Xero and QuickBooks Online – side by side and share with you everything I learn. Starting today.


QBO vs Xero?

I can’t ignore QBO anymore. My clients need to know. I need to know to help my clients better.

{ I took my own advice yesterday when I decided I was jack of writing promotional and productivity mumbo jumbo… if you still want productivity and promotional advice from me I’ll start a book club and let you know how I learned…. it’s time for me to focus on my core: learning and sharing the greatness and possibilities of the cloud revolution }

Already, I have found that QBO has the ability to track categories and even warn you when you haven’t entered a category – like MYOB does with job codes. Something that has bugged me about Xero.

You can also choose whether you want to track your transactions by category at a line by line level or choose the category for the entire transaction. That’s a time saver either way!

And did I mention you can track by multiple locations as well as categories. No limits on the number of categories or locations you can have like the two tracking categories limit in Xero…. Mmmm…

I’m looking forward to this and I can’t wait to share with you what else I find!
